- Weld properties: Do you have any specific properties you desire out of your weld? If so, this could affect your choice of welding gas. If you want a flatter profile with less spatter, an argon or argon/CO2 mixture is ideal. This is because argon, as an inert gas, does not react with the molten weld. However, pure argon is quite expensive, so adding CO2 can cut costs while still delivering the quality and properties you’re looking for.
- Productivity: Certain types of gas also provide different productivity benefits. Argon/helium mixtures, for example, are commonly used when speed is desired, as it produces a hotter arc.
